Autism Evaluations for Children
Lighthouse Autism Center now offers autism evaluations at every Lighthouse location. If your child is missing developmental milestones, or you are seeing signs of autism in your child, it’s critical to seek an autism evaluation. Research shows that the earlier children are diagnosed, the better their outcomes. Early intervention is critical for children with autism and an autism diagnosis is the first step to early intervention.
Our autism evaluation team will work with you to collect the necessary paperwork to complete the evaluation and then schedule your child’s autism evaluation at a center near you.
The Autism Diagnostic and Evaluation Process
Lighthouse Autism Center knows the importance of diagnosing autism spectrum disorders, early intervention, and making autism resources available to caregivers. We are here every step of the way and pride ourselves on a collaborative, clinical approach to assisting you through the diagnostic process.
Our team includes a licensed clinical psychologist, licensed clinical social workers and mental health counselors, as well as BCBAs.
To begin the process, you will attend a virtual parent interview with our psychologist or other qualified licensed professional, followed by an evaluation. During the evaluation, caregiver and child with meet with a qualified technician, which may include a BCBA or other licensed clinical professional for approximately one hour in which the clinician will administer an assessment, including either the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Second Edition (CARS 2), Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), or other standardized assessment for evaluating autism in children. Our clinician will observe and interact with the child in several play activities.
Following the appointment, our licensed psychologist will reach out to you to review their diagnostic findings including any diagnoses provided as well as recommendations for next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Diagnosing autism can take place as early as 18 months. The early signs of autism typically present as missed developmental milestones at an early age. Research shows that the earlier a child receives an autism diagnosis, the better their long-term outcomes. Lighthouse Autism Center offers autism evaluations to any child between the ages of 2 and 6.
There will be up to two appointments for our autism evaluations. The Initial Intake Appointment is completed virtually via Microsoft Teams. This appointment is primarily focused on an extensive set of questions regarding the learner’s developmental history, current functioning, and parental concerns. This information-gathering appointment is conducted following thorough medical records review, which includes intake paperwork completed by the parent as well as physician referrals and records.
Additionally, prior to this appointment, one to three online assessments are typically administered via email for the parent to complete. The examiner has the parent set the camera up so they can observe the child playing, and based on learner’s language level, the examiner talks with the child at this time.
Following the initial Intake Appointment, if recommended for further testing, we will request an authorization for an in-person appointment from your insurance company. Once authorization is received, we will schedule the in-person appointment.
Come prepared for the appointment with Microsoft Teams downloaded on your device, and login to the meeting 10 minutes in advance.
During virtual appointments, there will be a dedicated time for observation of your child. It is important for the examiner to see the child engaging in activities and with toys, rather than with electronics. Any of your child’s favorite toys can be incorporated and there is no need to purchase items or have all the items listed below. However, here are some ideas for things you may have around the house that you can gather for your appointment:
- Sensory items: bubbles, light-up toys, musical toys
- Social play: blanket or pillows (peekaboo, pillow fights), books, ball
- Independent and pretend play: play kitchen, dollhouse, puzzle, cars, Lego, dolls, dinosaurs, action figures, stuffed animals
Following the Initial Intake Appointment, Lighthouse’s clinical psychologist and team will determine the appropriate testing for your child’s needs. Tests may include: CARS, ADOS, ADI-R, or others.
Your initial intake appointment is with a licensed clinical psychologist or their immediate team of LCSW or BCBA. If additional testing (in-person) is recommended, you will meet with a highly trained Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). The BCBA and psychologist review documentation and video recordings together to determine a diagnosis and provide helpful autism tools for parents.
You will receive your complete report typically within 3 weeks of your in-person appointment. Our psychologist calls each family to provide diagnostic results, provide resources, and answer any questions. You will then receive a copy of the diagnostic report.
Yes! Referral signed by an MD, DO, PsyD, or HSPP, stating the need for an Autism Evaluation is required.
A school diagnosis provides the opportunity for your child to obtain education-based assistance, including an IEP. A medical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder provides the opportunity for medical-based resources, such as Lighthouse Fusion ABA Therapy, and certain Medicaid services. Lighthouse provides a medical diagnosis of ASD through our clinical psychologist.
Parent(s) and/or guardian and the child being evaluated are the only permitted individuals for the evaluation. Other children may not be present.
If you do not have WIFI, Lighthouse will schedule your Virtual Initial Intake Appointment to take place at your nearest center. We will provide a laptop or Ipad for you to complete your Intake virtually with our clinical team.
